Cold weather and winter winds can wreak havoc on your skin. It is never too early to start implementing winter skin care tips. These will help the skin stay moist, supple and healthy during these harsh cold months. One of the most frequent problems associated with this weather, is drying, flaking and irritated skin.
To keep the skin on your face supple and protected in winter, it is essential to apply moisturizer before going out. In winter you may find the need to use moisturiser more frequently, depending on your lifestyle and extent of exposure to the elements. Also, covering your face with a scarf in harsh wind is recommended to avoid wind burns.
Sun protection is just as important in the winter months as it is the summer. Many people forget to use sunscreen in winter or think it’s not as important, but this is not the case. The sun reflects off snow and ice, and you can actually get double the sun exposure. There may be less UVB rays (burning rays) in winter, but there is still UVA rays (aging rays) to consider. The delicate skin on the face needs protection from these just as much in winter as in the warm summer months. Added to this is the problem with the ozone layer, nowadays, there is even more exposure than in years gone by.
One great way to keep your skin in good condition is getting a massage. A good therapist will identify your skin type and blend oils accordingly. You don't have to go to a specialist for this all the time, many therapists will provide blended oils for you to use at home to maximize on your treatment and allow for enhanced and prolonged effect. The benefits of this are a product that is designed specifically for your skin and also that it is safe and professionally blended.
Cold winter winds and low humidity are also hard on your hair. Use a rich intensive hair treatment to restore moisture to your hair. Using an apple cider vinegar rinse after washing your hair and massaging Aloe Vera juice into the hair and scalp for a few minutes and rinsing will help restore its softness. Dandruff usually gets worse in the winter. Eliminate flaking by using a moisturizing shampoo that also has a soothing effect on your scalp. Beware when choosing an anti-dandruff shampoo, many products actually remove your hair and scalps natural oils. This leads to frizzy hair and poor scalp condition with repeated use. It is treating the symptoms and not the condition itself. Use gentle shampoo’s that clean the hair, but also have essential oils included for that specific condition. The results are clean shiny hair, healthy scalp and dandruff eliminated.
Licking your lips when they feel dry will not moisturize them, instead it will cause them to dry more and result in cracking and chapping. Lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out far more quickly. A good lip balm helps to protect them from the elements and also moisture loss. If you do happen to suffer with dry lips, it can be treated very easily, cheaply and effectively. Apply some petroleum jelly to the lips and massage, then gently exfoliate with a tooth brush. Wash with warm water and apply some moisturiser and then lip balm. It is important to moisturise the lips even when using lip balm. The moisturiser will help rehydrate while the balm will nourish and protect.
The skin on your hands is thinner than in other areas of your body. The hands are also exposed to the elements and temperature changes more frequently. They need extra protection and care especially in winter. Dry your hands thoroughly after washing and use a good rich hand cream. Always wear protective gloves when washing-up. Wearing gloves outdoors will protect your hands from oil and moisture loss and also keep your skin soft. These need to be soft and not irritating to the skin. Depending on your lifestyle, your hands should be exfoliated once a week also, followed by a super rich hand cream.
Your elbows and knees are usually completely covered in the cold winter months. Clothing, boots and socks can cause friction creating a buildup of excess dry dehydrated skin. A weekly exfoliation on these areas, followed by a good body lotion or body butter will pay dividends.
A gentle body scrub and facial exfoliant will help remove dead skin cells from your body and your face. Add this to your skin care routine once a week. This will allow for better absorption of body lotion/butter and will boost circulation also.
It is worth paying a little extra attention to the feet. A pumice stone or foot file on the more difficult areas on the feet works a treat. For extra conditioning for the feet, massage in a rich foot cream and put on bed socks straight away. In the morning this will result in super soft skin.
Avoid taking long hot baths during winter, this can be drying on the skin. When you are having a bath, use a bath oil to help nourish the skin. Always use a body lotion afterwards.
