Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a key nutrient for good skin. It is essential for skin renewal at cellular level. Vitamin A acts as a humectant, helping the skin retain moisture and preventing dehydration. This allows for the skin to remain plumper, having a positive effect on fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin A is also a skin balancer, normalising the function of skin cells. This is especially beneficial to acne type skin as it helps in regulating sebum production. Vitamin A is also an anti-oxidant, preventing free radical damage and the onset of wrinkles.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is responsible for providing the skin with energy. All B vitamins are important in the production of skin cells. B vitamins regulate wound healing, important for those that suffer with spots, boils and any other disorder that result in rupturing of the skin. This group of vitamins also help in the synthesis of hormones.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for youthful looking skin. It stimulates collagen production, preventing sagging and thinning skin. Vitamin C is also an anti-oxidant, preventing free radical damage and the onset of fine lines and wrinkles. It is also an immune booster, helping to fight infections including acne and inflammatory conditions such as dermatitis and eczema.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is formed mostly in the skin and is essential for strong bones. It is made by a reaction when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Twenty minutes per day is adequate exposure to ensure good Vitamin D levels. It is also responsible for cell turnover.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a natural emollient, softening and moisturising to dry scaly skin. It helps restore suppleness to the skin allowing for smoother looking skin. Vitamin E is also an anti-oxidant, helping to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

Certain minerals also play key roles in healthy skin. Copper supports collagen production. Zinc is essential for mitosis (cell regeneration) and is important for immunity, including the skin’s immunity. Selenium has strong anti-oxidant properties, supporting immunity also. Magnesium along with zinc and the vitamins B3, B6 and biotin are essential for the conversion of omega 3 & 6 essential fats to active forms. Essential fatty acids are required for good healthy skin. These help the skin to retain suppleness and also control inflammation.
