Many women would love to have elegant healthy nails, without having to enhancements and the care they involve. A person’s diet is the primary factor in achieving good nails. Your nails will also be a good indication of any nutritional imbalances in your current diet. Nutritional imbalances may lead to vitamin deficiencies and will affect all bodily functions including the health of your skin. Below is a basic guide of nail conditions and may be an indication of which vitamins/minerals are lacking.
Dry Cuticles – Folic Acid, Vitamin C & Protein.
Dry & Brittle Nails – Vitamin A.
Fragile Nails – Vitamin B.
Excessive Dryness – Vitamin B12.
Darkened Nails – Vitamin B12.
Vertical Ridges – Iron.
White Spots – Zinc, Sometimes trauma to the nail.
Fungal problems – Lactobacilli (good bacteria).
White Horizontal Bands – Protein.
Ridges (horizontal & vertical) – Vitamin B.
Curved or Rounded Nail Edges – Vitamin B12.
Spoon Nails – Iron.
Consuming a more balanced diet will lead to healthier nails and healthier skin, including plenty of fruit and vegetables. A nutritional supplement may also be taken. It’s always best to take a good quality broad spectrum multi-vitamin & mineral complex. Taking individual vitamins may cause a greater imbalance and lead to deficiencies in others. This does not apply to those that are under medical guidance or attending a qualified nutritional therapist.
Certain nail conditions such as blue nails may be indicative of a medical problem, always consult your medical practitioner if you have any concerns. Fungal infections should also addressed by medical care.
